Винсент Вилем ван Гог (на нидерландски: Vincent van Gogh, 1853 – 1890) е нидерландски художник, смятан от мнозина за един от най-великите художници в историята на европейското изкуство. Той е един от най-видните представители на постимпресионизма. През последните 10 години от своя живот развива цялата си художническа дейност – автор е на около 900 картини и 1100 рисунки. Самоубива се на 37 години, като се предполага, че е имал психически проблеми. Приживе остава непризнат, но посмъртно славата му се разнася, най-вече след като на 17 март 1901 г. в Париж, Франция са изложени 71 от неговите произведения. През 1973 г. в Холандия е открит музей, посветен изцяло на неговото изкуство и който разполага с най-богатата колекция от негови картини.

Ван Гог е подписвал само картините, които считал достатъчно завършени за да бъдат предложени на купувач, като е изписвал малкото си име „Винсент“.

Една от най-известните му творби е „Слънчогледите“ (1888, Арл).

Margot Begemann (eigentlich: Margaretha Carolina Begemann; * 17. März 1841 in Nuenen, Noord-Brabant, Niederlande; † 11. Februar 1907 in Den Haag) hatte im Sommer 1884 mit dem Maler Vincent van Gogh eine Liebesaffäre, die durch den Selbsttötungsversuch der Margot eine dramatische Wendung nahm.

Agostina Segatori (Ancona, 1841 - 1910, Paris) was the niece of Fortunata Segatori and a model who posed for painters in Paris, France, such as Édouard Joseph Dantan, Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot, Jean-Léon Gérôme, Eugène Delacroix, Vincent van Gogh and Édouard Manet. She is also known for running the Café du Tambourin in Paris.

Vincent van Gogh drew and painted a series of works of his mistress Sien during their time together in the Netherlands. In particular, his drawing Sorrow is widely acknowledged as a masterwork of draftsmanship, the culmination of a long and sometimes uncertain apprenticeship in learning his craft.

Commonly called Sien Hoornik, Clasina Maria Hoornik (1850–1904) lived with van Gogh during much of his time in The Hague from 1881 to 1883. Van Gogh used Sien, a pregnant prostitute, as a model for his work and later took Sien and her daughter into his home. Van Gogh made drawings and paintings of Sien and her daughter, baby and mother over that period, which reflected the domestic life and hardships of the working poor. Their relationship was not accepted by his family or supporters, although his brother Theo did not withdraw his support over it. It did contribute however, to a split with Anton Mauve, a cousin-in-law and noted painter of the Hague School, who had introduced Van Gogh to painting as well as supporting him financially, and whom Van Gogh revered. At his brother Theo's urging, Van Gogh left Sien in 1883 to paint in Drenthe, ending the only domestic relationship he would ever have.

Sien resumed her life as a seamstress, cleaning woman and likely prostitute before marrying in 1901. On 22 November 1904, aged 54, she threw herself into the Schelde river and drowned, fulfilling a prediction she had made to Van Gogh in 1883: "what the bad moods are is still more desperate ... 'it's bound to end up with me jumping into the water.'"
